Faster Check-In? How to Get Ready from Home

Standing in a long airport line is rarely the best way to start a trip. Fortunately, much of that waiting can be avoided with a little preparation before you leave home. With the right digital tools, some smart packing, and your documents in order, you can breeze through check-in and security — and start your journey stress-free. Here’s how to do it.
Check In Online — and Save Time at the Airport
Most airlines open online check-in 24 to 48 hours before departure. This allows you to confirm your details, choose your seat, and get your boarding pass sent straight to your phone.
Once you’ve checked in, you can usually head directly to the bag drop if you have checked luggage, or straight to security if you’re traveling with carry-on only.
Be sure to save your boarding pass on your phone — ideally both in the airline’s app and as a PDF or screenshot, just in case the app doesn’t load when you need it.
Pack Smart — and Know the TSA Rules
One of the biggest causes of delays at security is carry-on luggage that doesn’t meet the rules. To keep things moving smoothly:
- Pack liquids in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less, and place them in a clear quart-sized bag.
- Keep electronics like laptops and tablets easy to reach so you can remove them quickly.
- Empty your pockets of metal items before you reach the scanner.
If you’re traveling with carry-on only, double-check your airline’s size and weight limits. They vary, and last-minute gate checks can be expensive and time-consuming.
Keep Your Documents Organized
A fast check-in starts with having all your travel documents ready. That includes your passport, driver’s license or REAL ID, and any required travel authorizations or visas.
Create a digital folder on your phone with everything in one place — boarding passes, hotel reservations, and transportation details. That way, you can easily pull up what you need when asked.
If you’re traveling internationally, check whether your destination requires you to complete entry forms or customs declarations online before departure. Doing this in advance can save you time upon arrival.
Use the Airline’s App — It’s Your Best Travel Companion
Airline apps have become much more than just a place to store your boarding pass. They provide real-time updates on gate changes, boarding times, and delays.
Some even offer baggage tracking, so you can see where your suitcase is from check-in to arrival. That peace of mind can make a big difference if something goes wrong.
Turn on notifications so you’ll be alerted immediately if your flight schedule changes.
Arrive Early — but Not Too Early
Even with great preparation, it’s still smart to arrive at the airport with time to spare. As a general rule:
- 2 hours before departure for domestic flights.
- 3 hours before departure for international flights.
That gives you enough time to drop off bags, clear security, and find your gate without stress.
But don’t arrive excessively early — check-in counters usually open only a few hours before departure, and arriving too soon may just mean extra waiting.
Bonus: Take Advantage of Expedited Options
Many airlines, credit cards, and loyalty programs offer access to priority check-in or TSA PreCheck lanes. These can be a huge time-saver, especially during busy travel seasons.
If you travel frequently, consider enrolling in TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, or CLEAR. These programs allow you to move through security and customs faster, often without removing shoes, belts, or laptops.
A Smoother Start to Your Trip
Preparing from home isn’t just about saving time — it’s about starting your trip with peace of mind. When you’ve handled check-in, packing, and documents ahead of time, you can spend your airport moments on what really matters: grabbing a coffee, browsing the shops, or simply relaxing before takeoff.
